Summary: In order to have a sequel, you need another island ("Site B") with more species of dinosaurs. And they had to make sure that the ""rapt-pack" was back. If you do, then Jurassic Park 2 is a "go" on Isla Nublar. Of course, John Hammond has to trick Ian Malcolm into following his new girlfriend (Julianne Moore) to the dangerzone and have his multi-racial, "tumbling-tot" of a daughter stowaway so that he can defeat the bad guys and save the good guys. As a final gesture of goodwill Goldblum then saves San Diego from Mama T-Rex, who is looking for her baby to rescue it from the clutches of InGen. The effects are spectacular and the story so dumb that it is the eighth highest grossing movie of all-time. All The Lost World: Jurassic Park asks of the audience is that it get on the rollercoaster and ride as often as possible. Yes Dorothy, there will be a Jurassic Park 3! "And the money keeps rollin’ in…" (Evita)

Summary: Men in Black is based on the Malibu comic by Lowell Cunningham. And it is the smartest, "hipest," wickedest and "saaviest" SF comic book adaptation in films to date. Agents of Division 6, a top-secret law enforcement agency, Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) and Jay (Will Smith) are assigned by their controller, Zed (Rip Torn), to monitor alien immigration on earth. They foil the dastardly plot of a cockroach-terrorist (Vincent D'Onofrio) to assassinate an alien ambassador. MiB is outrageously funny, because it plays the insane humor straight up. The originality of the alien designs is the remarkable work of Rick Baker’s crew. The special effects work of ILM is also top notch. It is creepy bad fun. It is irreverent! Crunch!

Summary: Amistad was the first film directed by Steven Spielberg to be released by DreamWorks/Red Feather. In 1839, there was a mutiny onboard a slave ship, Amistad that was traveling towards the Northeast Coast of America. The mutineers and the slavers were taken into custody, then the slavers were released and the mutineers were tried for mutiny/murder. During the trial the slavers attempted to regain the "property." President Martin van Buren had tilted the case against the defendants. The Queen of Spain became involved in the controversy surrounding the trial. And former President John Quincy Adams was part of the defense team. Writer Barbara Chase-Riboud unsuccessfully sued to prevent the release of this film, claiming that the screenplay copied portions of her novel Echo of Lions.

"I don't think we're dealing with an ordinary mouse."

DVD DreamWorks 84159

Summary: The hapless Schmuntz brothers (Nathan Lane & Lee Evans) inherit a dilapidated old house that includes a string factory from their father. The house is run by the mouse from hell that defeats the deadliest of all the exterminators (Christopher Walken). This slapstick layered with black humor is a treat, in large measure to the pratfall comic style of the Schmuntz putzes. They are the Laurel and Hardy or if you add in the mouse as Curly, The Three Smouses. It is all wham, bamm and scram.

Summary: Z-4195, a worker ant (Voice of Woody Allen), is out of sync with his totalitarian hive society. He trades positions with his friend Weaver, a soldier ant (Voice of Sylvester Stallone), to get the attention of Princess Bala (Voice of Sharon Stone) during a parade. Unfortunately, war breaks out and Z becomes a reluctant hero. He starts to spread the idea of individualism throughout the hive, but the evil General Mandible (Voice of Gene Hackman) has plans of his own to grab power and marry the Princess. Woody saves the hive and gets the girl. This a wonderful adult film, but may have been over-the-heads of the "Disneyphile" kids. This was the first CGI-animated film released by DreamWorks SKG.

"I'm a bird. I have a small brain, and it's about to explode."

Summary: DreamWorks SKG is attempting to compete with Disney in both child-oriented Animation and live action films. Paulie is a fine offering that had limited success, but should do well in the video and YV markets. Paulie, a stand-up comic of a parrot, the story of his life to a janitor at the research institute, where he is an experimentally abused and neglected bird. He has passes one owner to the next living a life of adventure. Paulie helps a little girl lose her stutter, but her father fails to believe in a parrot that can think as ell as communicate. This ia a film that parents can appreciate and laugh along with their children,

"We're not toys, we're action figures!"

DVD DreamWorks 84161

Summary: This is a pint-sized version of the "The Dirty Dozens does Suburbia." The ugly Gorgonites are the good guys and the Commando Elite turns out to be the paranoid bad guys, whose prime directive is to destroy the Gorgonites. The key plot point is that the toy designer installed military computer chips in the Major Chip Hazard (Voice of Tommy Lee Jones) and the other members of his team. The Gorgonites are lead by Archer (the magnificent voice of Frank Langella), and hide in a precocious teen’s parent's house. Unfortunately, the good guys are programmed to lose. The computer Animation is terrific wonderful, but the teens and their parents are annoying in extremis. And the action is violent. This was Phil Hartman’s last film, before his wife murdered him. This was DreamWorks first mixed media release.

Summary: A documentary on the horrors of the Holocaust for the Hungarian Jewish children. The documentary focuses on the last year of World War II, when Hitler and his Nazi accomplices accelerated the extermination of innocents before they lost the war, by diverting men and resources from the front to kill every Jew they could. Five survivors of the death camps, who now live in the United States, return to the sites of their imprisonment with their offsprings and describe their experiences. It is one of the most powerful films ever made about the extent of these despicable atrocities. The five survivors recount pleasant childhood memories, their deportation to the camps, unbelievable escapes from execution, liberation, and immigration to America The film is described as "the story of five remarkable people whose strength and will to live represent the extraordinary power of the human spirit." One of the participants is Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor ever elected to Congress. Alice Lok Cahana is a gifted artist whose work expresses the horrors and joys of life. Bill Basch is retired from the fashion industry. Irene Zisblatt is a proud grandmother and self-made businesswoman. Renee Firestone works closely with the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Educational Outreach Program and Shoah speaking to audiences of school children on the current implications of the Holocaust. It is the inspirational story of their survival of a tragedy that has no explanation, at least in human terms. One interviewee explains that when she understood the brutality of the Germans towards children that that was when she stopped talking to God.

It is a movie about five harrowing journeys that must always be remembered or they will continue to be repeated as they have been in Cambodia, Africa, Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Kosovo. The new word that must be deleted from man’s inhumanity to man is "ethnic cleansing."

Summary: Deep Impact was the first mega-hit produced by DreamWorks SKG (with Zanuck-Brown) and released overseas by Red Feather Photoplays. Paramount released the film domestically. The film is another doomsday movie, wherein mankind must figure out how to avoid or at least reduce the effect of a near apocalyptic event. The disaster movie genre has been reborn recently with volcanoes erupting and twisters thrashing about. After all the millenium is approaching! In 1994, over 20 pieces of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 were caught in Jupiter’s gravitational pull and the chunks slammed into the surface of the planet with spectacular results. That, plus what we now think happened to the dinosaurs, triggered two films, Deep Impact and Armageddon, and both of them were hits in 1998. Deep Impact traces the changes wrought in the lives a wide range of protagonists. A high school student (Elijah Wood) spots the approaching comet in the night sky and it is eventually named for him. As the ‘Wolf-Biederman’ comet races towards earth an NBC reporter (Tea Leoni) traces the story. Eventually, the President (Morgan Freeman) announces the dreadful news. And then there is a lottery of sorts to save a nucleus of humans, ala Dr. Strangelove. Astronauts are sent off blast the comet off course, but chunks of it reach Earth so that the movie can have spectacular FX in the last reel.

Summary: The new Zorro, Alejandro Murietta (Antonio Banderas), rides out again as the people’s champion – a Mexican Robin Hood in Old California. He defeats with the help of the old Zorro, Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), the ruthless former Mexican Governor Raphael Montero (Stuart Wilson) and his Gringo assassin, Captain Harrison Love (Matthew Letscher). And the old Zorro gets his sexy, very sexy, daughter (Catherine Zeta Jones) back from the kidnapper Montero. The reason you need two bad guys is that the old Zorro fights Montero in the resolution while the young Zorro takes on Capitano Love. But the best dueling is saved for Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones. The film is somewhat muddled but has elan and wonderful swordplay. So they have the history screwed, it’s movie and audiences loved the cocksure performances of all of the principals. An director Martin Campbell made sure there was plenty of good old boy Western James Bond action on the screen.

Saving Private Ryan Summary: This is the most powerful World War II drama ever made. The fictionalized film is based upon the true story of the Niland brothers: one brother was killed on D-Day while in the 82nd Airborne, another brother was killed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry Division, and the third was killed in Burma. General George Marshall, the army Chief of staff determines to save the last brother and send him home to his grieving Mother. A patrol is sent to find Private James Ryan (Matt Damon) shortly following the invasion of Normandy (D Day the 6th of June 1944. The seven men in Captain John Miller’s (Tom Hanks) squad have managed to survive the horrific carnage of Omaha Beach and the are assigned the onerous task of Saving Private Ryan. Only Oliver Stone’s Platoon (the Vietnam War) and Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory (World War I) match this film in its exploration of heroism and humanity as well as harrowing chaos of the battlefield.

Gladiator (1999)

DreamWorks SKG, Universal Pictures

USA, DRAMA/Historical, Minutes, Rated , Color, Aspect Ratio

Summary: General Narcissus Meridas (Russell Crowe) is well loved and trusted by the Emperor, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). So much so that he is named heir to the throne. But, when his son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) murders the Emperor, Narcissus is banished to the Coliseum. As Maximus the Gladiator, he seeks revenge. The film begins with the Romans manning the Danube frontier. Narcissus is a Spaniard who has never actually seen Rome, but commands the army, because he is able and has the confidence of the Emperor. The emperor's 20-year-old son, makes a surprise visit to see his father at the battle field. The young man's delusions of grandeur are immediately apparent, and he is jealous of Narcissus, who is a family man with a wife and daughters at home. Commodus makes it appear Narcissus has betrayed his army and banishes him to be killed as a gladiator. Juba (Djimon Hounsou) is a Narcissus ally, and he too is banished to the gladiatorial arena. Proximo (Oliver Reed) is the head of the gladiator school and a smart businessman, and therefore sees the profit potential. The great gladiators were the star athletes in Rome, much like sports stars today. But the way to become a star gladiator is to be the one who stays alive the longest fighting against other gladiators and exotic, ferocious beasts.

Historically, according to historian Cassius Dio, 'Commodus was a greater curse to the Romans that any pestilence or crime.' Vain and frivolous, he ordained that Rome be called Commodianna and gave himself up to the pleasures of executions, chariot races and lion baiting. Finally after 12 years of misrule, Commodus was assassinated." Marcus Aurelius probably died of the plague. This subject was also filmed as The Fall of the Roman Empire by Anthony Mann starring Alec Guiness (Marcus Aurelius), Christopher Plummer (Commodus) and Stephen Boyd (Livius).

Summary: Late June, 1998... Universal officially announces a third Jurassic picture for summer 2000. Amblin Entertainment, Spielberg's production company, will produce the film. In the Universal press release Spielberg said "We have an opportunity to build on the experience and excitement that audiences have come to expect from us. Michael Crichton knows how to surprise and entertain audiences with themes and stories that are smart and original. We've had great success together and, along with Universal Pictures and my colleagues at Amblin, look forward to continuing our association with this next Jurassic Park film."

In the aftermath of yet another Jurassic Park-related disaster, something has survived. Yep, you guessed it, lots of cool dinosaurs. A rumor exists it may be a prequel. Another rumor is that novel may be titled Embryo or Extinction. In which embryos are created on the mainland and then the dinosaurs are set free in the civilized world. Or the plot takes place long after the second in a scenario on the mainland. Nature takes its course and an earthquake frees the beasts onto the streets of an overpopulated city full of humans.
